Course description
Packraft for Remote Access & Rescue is a custom course designed for teams who want to get deeper into wild country for work or play.
Pre-course work:
- Video modules on equipment considerations, paddle technique, recovery exercises, and hydrology.
- Remote trip planning with Google Earth and CalTopo.
Days 1 and 2:
- River safety: The parts of a Swiftwater Rescue Technician course that apply to paddlers and remote settings: throw ropes, wading techniques, swiftwater swimming, foot entrapment.
- Boat control: Your paddling skills determine your ability to stay out of harm's way and reach someone who might want help: maneuvering, paddle technique, loose equipment and swimmer recovery.
Days 3-5:
- River running: You've built a foundation—now it's time to put it to the test on Class II+ or III- rapids.
- Overnight excursion: Off-trail hiking and paddling on Class II+ or III- rivers. Backcountry considerations for navigation, communication, and emergencies.
