Course description

Packraft for Remote Access & Rescue is a custom course designed for teams who want to get deeper into wild country for work or play.

Pre-course work:

  • Video modules on equipment considerations, paddle technique, recovery exercises, and hydrology.
  • Remote trip planning with Google Earth and CalTopo.

Days 1 and 2:

  • River safety: The parts of a Swiftwater Rescue Technician course that apply to paddlers and remote settings: throw ropes, wading techniques, swiftwater swimming, foot entrapment.
  • Boat control: Your paddling skills determine your ability to stay out of harm's way and reach someone who might want help: maneuvering, paddle technique, loose equipment and swimmer recovery.

Days 3-5:

  • River running: You've built a foundation—now it's time to put it to the test on Class II+ or III- rapids.
  • Overnight excursion: Off-trail hiking and paddling on Class II+ or III- rivers. Backcountry considerations for navigation, communication, and emergencies.
Luc is, by far, the most thoughtful and conscientious instructor I've ever had the pleasure of working with. He is able to explain things in a way that makes sense, and he cares as much about the experience of his students as he does about their safety.
